In today’s guide I will discuss some keys to Tanking in Overwatch, helping to make yourself a better tank and ultimately helping your team win the game. You have 3 basic types of tanks, shield, dive and more dps heavy tanks.
Shield tanks are primarily used in payload situations to push or protect the payload. The key to shield tanks it to be at the front lines, keeping your shield up and making sure your team can poke and test the other team behind the shield or close to the shield. The biggest key for any tank is to stay alive, tank won’t usually have a ton on damage but they can open up an entire map for a team. Being a shield tank makes you have to be a fairly high iq player knowing when to use your other abilities, making sure your team is together for pushes and making sure you can do some damage in fights.
Dive tanks are used primarily for control points and attacking in payload maps. Dive tanks are very good for opening points and being an overall aggressive team, using dive tanks usually helps teams play more aggressive and bully teams off points. The things that usually can go bad for dive tanks is having dps players who don’t try to follow up the dives, or if your healers cannot stay alive. Dive tanks take a fairly high iq to know when to dive in, combo on the other teams healers and open the point for your dps to slaughter the other team.
The DPS heavy tanks, Zarya and Roadhog, take probably the smartest tank players to play as they do not have a mechanism to really keep themselves alive. They rely on their team to help and there’s really not any way to push with a strategy, When using dps tanks you really rely on picks, especially with the hog hook, making a push with Zaryas bubbles and hogs hook help, especially if you can focus on the healers. The bad that comes with dps tanks are that they can die fairly easily and quickly, with tanks having to lead the charge. Without dps players who can help focus on certain picks from the other team a dps push as tanks can be ended really quickly.
Tanks take a high iq to play and are the main source of aggression and opening for a team. In order for a team to win the tank players need to do an above average job opening fights and using their abilities the right way.
